I will first present an alternative method to measure the SFR of individual galaxies based on their locations in the rest-frame color diagram (NUV-r) vs (r-K). This method has been calibrated thanks to the 24u sample and the stacking of Herschel data. I will use this technique (+ SED fitting) to investigate the dust-free UV luminosity functions in between 0<z<1.2 and the predictions for the global SFRD and per stellar mass down to 10^8-8.5 Mo. I will discuss what this tells us about the possible cause for the decline of the SF activity with cosmic time.
