The cosmic growth of the active black hole population in zCOSMOS, VVDS and SDSS

Andreas SCHULZE
(Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Peking University (KIAA))

We employ the deep spectroscopic surveys zCOSMOS and VVDS and combine them with the bright, large area SDSS survey to study the growth history of supermassive black holes. This is achieved via the joint determination of the active black hole mass function and the Eddington ratio distribution function. While the high mass end has been studied from the SDSS, the deep zCOSMOS and VVDS surveys are essential to cover a wide luminosity range and thus constrain the black hole mass and Eddington ratio function at lower values and derive the cosmic evolution of these distribution functions.
