We investigate stellar populations, stellar dynamics and star-formation histories of 38 radio-loud galaxies (L > 10^23 W/Hz ) at 0.6 < z < 1, cross-matching the deep VLT/VIMOS LEGA-C spectroscopic survey data and VLA 3 GHz dataset. We find that z~1 radio-loud AGN occur almost exclusively in the oldest galaxies -- without ongoing star formation -- with the highest stellar velocity dispersions. Our results strengthen the existing evidence for a link between quiescence and radio-loudness in galaxies at z ~ 1, and suggest that such galaxies switch-on as radio AGN ~ once every Gyr.
